Plexr Plasma Pen

Skinstitute FAQ

What is plasma?
Plasma is a preferred to as the fifth state of matter. It consists of "excited" electrons, not dissimilar to a mini-lightning bolt or spark. The high energy it produces causes a sublimation of skin cells (solid) which are turned into gas.
What does "fractional" mean?

Fractional therapy describes a treatment that exposes only a fraction of the skin to the plasma arc in a pattern of tiny dots. With plasma, tiny dots of skin are vaporized(removed) leaving surrounding skin intact. As the thousands of holes close up and heal, the skin contracts and tightens.

This treatment method shortens the healing time and stimulates the body’s own natural process for creating new collagen, plumping the skin from below and improving wrinkles and other imperfections.

  • Tiny holes enable safe treatment and a rapid recovery.
  • Deep treatment provides results in a single session.
  • Controlled energy means maximum results with a more comfortable patient experience.
  • Patients will see significant improvement after just one treatment.
Who is a candidate for Plexr plasma?
Patients with light to medium skin tones and skin imperfections, such as wrinkles, lax skin, scarring, and brown spots due to ageing and sun damage, will benefit from a resurfacing treatment. Moles, skin tags, seborrheic keratosis (SK) and xanthelasma may also be removed using plasma.
What areas of the face can be treated?
This treatment can be used on the entire face and neck and is uniquely effective in treating droopy eyelids, crows feet (lines around the eyes) and lines and wrinkles around the mouth. These areas often show the first signs of ageing and can be the most challenging to treat with injections alone, especially if left untreated for years or in sun-damaged skin which has lost elasticity.
How does a Plexr plasma treatment feel?
Most patients describe the treatment as a series of fast, hot pinches. A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to treatment to alleviate most discomfort. We will discuss your individual comfort needs with you and also offer local anaesthetic blocks, depending on your requirements and the area being treated. There will a burning sensation for the hours following the procedure which will have reduced greatly by bedtime if the after-care is followed.
When will I see results? How soon can I wear make-up?
Many patients see improvement one week after treatment. Maximum results are visible in one to three months. Patients may apply SPF and make-up around 7-10 days after treatment or as soon as the little scabs have fallen off on their own without assistance. Note that the scabs need to remain dry from water as this would soften them and increase the risk of premature removal and scarring. Only the healing balm provided may be applied.
What are the risks with having a Plexr plasma treatment?
Any procedure which causes inflammation (redness, swelling) poses a risk of PIH or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation where the treated zones leave the skin with brownish pigment. People of darker skin tones (who tan easily) are at a higher risk of this undesirable side effect. Test patched may be performed in a concealed area at the discretion of the practitioner to ascertain the skin's healing response. Your practitioner may also recommend a topical skincare to prepare your skin ahead of the procedure and reduce the skin's predisposition to produce pigment. Hyperpigmentation may be assisted or faded with the use of topical fading agents, IPL, laser and/or peels. In very rare cases, hypopigmentation may occur. These are zones where the skin's own natural pigment does't return, leaving paler skin tone instead. This may be temporary or permanent. Should the healing period be disrupted (scabs scratched off or wet, sun baking too soon, etc) there is a possibility of scars showing as depressed textured areas.
Are there any restrictions on my activity after a Plexr plasma procedure?
After treatment, the skin looks covered in tiny dark scabs and becomes swollen. Peak swelling is after 24 hours in most people and resolves rapidly thereafter. Patients report manageable discomfort post-treatment not dissimilar to a bad sunburn. During post-care, patients apply the supplied ointment to the skin for five to seven days and should avoid sun exposure and wear a large brim hat. We advise that you factor in approximately five to seven days of being mainly at home, during the recovery period. You will feel fine to work from home but will most likely feel self-conscious in public.
How does Plexr plasma compare to other fractional laser treatments?
We have trialled many different resurfacing lasers, and we made our decision based on scientific data and our own experience in the various laser trials. There is no doubt that our choice of Plasma is an effective solution in addressing the advance of ageing on the skin, resulting in very significant rejuvenation, superior to all other devices that we have trialled in our opinion. The safety in treating the eyelids without the need for corneal shields (stainless contact lenses) is a net improvement over resurfacing lasers. The instant cauterization (sealing) of the treated zones as compared to Erbium or CO2 lasers where oozing and weeping is common, reduces the risk of infection and the messiness of the after-care to a minimum. The absence of surgical scars as well as the rejuvenation of the skin of the whole eyelid is in our opinion, the main reason to choose plasma over surgical blepharoplasty.
